Continuous Soil Sampling (Using Dual Tube and Macro Core® Methods)

Macro Core® Method

The Macro-Core® Soil Sampler collects core samples of unconsolidated materials in 48 and 60-inch plastic liners, each 1.5 inches in diameter. Depending on soil conditions, various depths can be reached using this method.

Dual Tube Method

Dual Tube Method can be used in different ways. It combines soil core collection with the ability to perform groundwater profiling as well as the installation of pre-packed screen monitoring wells through the same tool string. This method is usually used when coring depths exceed 20 ft. Dual tube sampling consists of two sets of probe rods. One set of rods are driven into the ground as an outer casing. These rods receive the driving force from the hammer and provide a sealed hole from which soil samples may be recovered without the threat of cross contamination. The second, smaller set of rods, are placed inside the outer casing. The smaller rods hold a sample liner in place as the outer casing is driven by one sampling interval. The small rods are then retracted to retrieve the filled liner.
  • Mostly used in saturated and unsaturated areas
  • To eliminate cross contamination when in water tables
  • Set temporary wells
  • Perform groundwater profiling
Groundwater samples collected using direct-push methods and one-time use (i.e., “temporary”) monitoring wells are referred to as “grab” samples. These samples are obtained using a wide assortment of sampling devices and techniques, instead of through established methods from standard monitoring wells constructed to Wis. Adm. Code NR 141 specification. Our methods of collection are listed as follows.

-Geoprobe™ Screen Point 16 Groundwater Sampler is directly pushed from ground level to approximately 2’ below-known groundwater level. A ¼” rod is inserted through the probe rod string to the bottom of the sampler. The sampler is then extracted while applying hand pressure to the ¼” rod. Thus knocking off the expendable point and exposing a 10-slot stainless steel screen at the desired depth.

-Groundwater Samples are drawn by three methods
  • ¾” Bailer
  • ¼” Tubing with Foot Check Valve
  • ¼” Tubing with Peristaltic Pump

Soil Vapor / Gas Sampling

PRT Active Sampling: The Post Run Tubing (PRT) is an ideal tool for locating and delineating contaminated areas. It allows the user to collect soil vapor samples quickly and easily at the desired sampling depth without rod leakage and cross contamination. O-ring connections enable the PRT system to deliver a vacuum-tight seal that prevents sample contamination from UP hole and assures that the sample is taken from the desired depth at the bottom of the hole. The sample is drawn through the point holder, through the adapter, and in the sample tubing. The tubing can be replaced after each sample, thus eliminating sample carryover problems and the need to decontaminate the probe rods. Time-savings!
